EEG
EEG, electroencephalogram, is a test that measures patient brain waves and detects electrical activity in the brain using small, metal discs (electrodes) attached to the scalp. Brain cells communicate through electrical impulses and are always active. This activity appears as wavy lines on an EEG recording. EEG can determine changes in brain activity that are useful in diagnosing brain disorders, such as Epilepsy.
Modalities
A Routine EEG is typically conducted in a hospital, physician’s office, or even in the comfort of your home, and usually takes between 30 to 60 minutes. It serves as one of the most important initial diagnostic tools for identifying epilepsy, seizure disorders, and various other neurological conditions such as brain tumors, strokes, or head injuries. As a first step in neurodiagnostic evaluation, a Routine EEG provides your physician with essential insights to help guide an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment plan.
An In-Home EEG (Ambulatory EEG or AEEG) is a safe, painless diagnostic test conducted in the comfort of the patient’s home. Similar to a Routine EEG, it records the brain’s electrical activity to provide valuable insights for diagnosis and treatment. However, unlike the shorter Routine EEG, an AEEG is typically performed over a period of 3 to 5 days to capture extended brain activity. This longer monitoring period allows physicians to collect more comprehensive data, leading to a more accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment plan.
At Monitoring Advanced Services (MAS), we provide real-time monitoring of AEEG studies to ensure your physician is continually informed about your condition throughout the duration of the test. AEEG is often recommended when additional information is needed beyond what a Routine EEG can provide, making it a critical step in achieving precise and effective neurological care.
Continuous EEG (cEEG), also known as Long-Term Monitoring (LTM), is an advanced diagnostic method used to record brain activity over extended periods—ranging from several hours to days or even weeks. This type of monitoring is especially valuable in critical care settings such as the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Neuro ICU, or other inpatient areas. It can also be conducted in a home setting, similar to Ambulatory EEG (AEEG), depending on the patient's condition and physician's recommendations.
At Monitoring Advanced Services (MAS), our expert EEG technologists monitor cEEG and LTM data in real-time to ensure patient safety and deliver timely updates to the attending physicians. This continuous observation allows for immediate response to neurological changes, supporting accurate diagnoses and informed clinical decisions for optimal patient outcomes.
An Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU), also known as a Seizure Monitoring Unit (SMU), is a specialized area within the hospital dedicated to the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of seizure disorders for patients of all ages. In this controlled environment, physicians may temporarily reduce or adjust seizure medications to safely capture and study seizure activity.
Using advanced video EEG technology, the EMU records brain activity and behavior before, during, and after a seizure. This comprehensive data collection allows specialists to accurately identify seizure types and pinpoint their origin within the brain. With this critical information, physicians can create highly personalized treatment plans—whether that involves medication adjustments, dietary therapy, neurostimulation techniques, or surgical options.
The goal of the EMU is to provide precise diagnoses and empower patients with the most effective path toward seizure control and improved quality of life.
